Taxonomic Hierarchy

The taxon relationships are inferred from the taxonomic hierarchy in the Mammal Diversity Database (MDD). The sorting from class to family-level relationships follows the phylogenetic hierarchy in the Checklist of the Mammals of the World (2020). Lower taxa were sorted in alphabetical order for easier navigation and consistency.

Extinct Species

Extinct species are based on records in the last 500 years.

Labels

Taxa are labeled with their respective taxonomic ranks (e.g., Class, Order, Family, Genus, Living species, extinct species). Extinct species are indicated with a ☠️ emoji. The numbers on the labels represent the number of children (e.g., number of families in an order, number of genera in a family, number of living species in a genus, etc.).

Tree Navigation

Click on the taxon names to view more details about each taxon. The tree is interactive, allowing you to expand and collapse branches to explore different levels of the hierarchy. Use the +/- buttons to expand or collapse its children.
